Birth Story – by Sarah H.

My first daughter was born on a bed with the help of an epidural. My second daughter was born at Launceston hospital, by natural water birth. Two completely different types of birth, I had heard that childbirth could be an amazing experience, something positive and enjoyable, connecting with your body and your baby, I wanted to experience that!

Being new to Launceston, my daughter who was 2 years old, had not yet become familiar with any adults so we made the decision include her at the hospital birth. After my first birth, the thought of doing it with a toddler present was a little scary, so I contacted Cherie. At our first meeting my daughter (one who normally shys from strangers) connected with her straight away, bringing Cherie toys, they even worked on a sticker book together.

As this would be my first completely natural birth I had lots of questions, but mainly it was my confidence that lacked, Cherie lent me many books and videos, even one for my daughter to read. She sent me emails and msgs of encouragement when I felt anxious. It was wonderful to run my thoughts over with someone who had experienced this many times before.

On the day of the birth we all arrived at the hospital, my 2 year old daughter went to Cherie who cared for her, made sure she had a full tummy and activities to do, I never heard my daughter made any sounds, she played happily through the entire labour.

Cherie provided support to my husband who was able to relax and enjoy the special day. She became the strong feminine presence that was needed in the room for us all to calm and also ensured that the hospital staff were aware of my preferences which was a great relief.

I was able to experience that amazing birth I had heard other women speak of, one that has left me in owe of what I achieved and grateful for the support I was given, in fact I can hardly stop talking about!

I would love to have more children and after such a beautiful birth I will be including Cherie in my future births.
